I’ve been involved in disability watersports for more than 15 years, however, it is only recently that Clyde Muirshiel gained national recognition for our work with those with Additional Support Needs (ASN).

Boats sail offThree years of hard work resulted in us becoming Scotland’s First Centre of Excellence for RYA Sailability in 2012.  Since then we have had MSP visits, the UK Rotary President (they funded the hoist and a boat) and a visit from HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of Sailability - she named 2 of our boats, the names of which were suggested by pupils from local schools.

Children from many ASN schools in west central Scotland have had a sailing taster session. The feedback has been fantastic so everyone is very keen it continues.  The idea behind the Race is to promote sailing as a very accessible sport to all and to celebrate the Games. It also gives the sailors a real goal to train towards.

I’m really looking forward to getting all the sailor’s together to start training for the event. I know, from talking to their teachers, that the kids are really excited to be taking part in this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Derek and Freedom, David Hill, Mike and Sunny SpeederFollowing on from the Race 2 the Games on Wednesay 2 July 2014 we’re planning to hold an annual Scottish schools regatta which will be open to any ASN school. I hope that this will inspire all schools to get involved in sailing at their local club or training centre and in the future be able to enter a team to represent their school in a Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park hosted regatta.

Who knows one day we might have provided the training for a future Paralympic sailor, that would be a fantastic legacy for Glasgow 2014.
